How to Clean a Squeeze Water Filter (Sawyer, Katadyn, Platypus)
Hollow-fiber filters slow down as they clog. Each maker has its own cleaning method. Here is what Sawyer, Katadyn and Platypus say.

Every squeeze filter slows down as silt and organic matter build up in its fibers. Cleaning restores the flow. Each brand recommends its own method, and using the wrong one can waste time or damage the filter.
By filter
Sawyer Squeeze: backflush. The kit includes a cleaning plunger and a cleaning coupling for backflushing, which sends clean water back through the filter in reverse. Sawyer publishes backflushing tips and videos on its product page, so follow those for the exact steps.
Katadyn BeFree: shake. Katadyn calls it the EZ-Clean membrane. Shake or swish the filter in water, in the field or at home. You do not need to backflush or use tools.
Platypus QuickDraw: both. Shake-to-clean is quick and loosens particles near the opening. Backflushing pushes clean water from the clean side out of the dirty side and clears the full length of the fibers. Platypus suggests a shake before each fill and a backflush every 10 L.
Slow flow?
Platypus lists two common causes. A new or stored filter may need its fibers re-wetted. A filter in use is probably clogged, so clean it. Platypus also warns that tea-colored water, from decaying plants, is hard on every filter. Find another source if you can, or clean the filter after each use.
Damage checks
Hollow fibers can crack if they freeze or if the filter is dropped, and you cannot see the damage. The QuickDraw has an integrity check for this. For any filter, keep it from freezing on cold nights. Many hikers keep it inside their sleeping bag. Replace it if you suspect damage.
Filters and viruses
None of these filters removes viruses. The CDC’s backcountry water guidance explains when to also disinfect. For a side-by-side of all three filters, see our best backpacking water filters.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I backflush?
Platypus suggests a shake-to-clean before each fill and a backflush after every 10 L for the QuickDraw. Adjust for dirtier water.
Does the Katadyn BeFree need backflushing?
No. Katadyn says to clean the BeFree by shaking or swishing it in water, with no backflush or tools.
Can a water filter freeze?
Freezing can damage hollow fibers. Platypus says its integrity check helps you find out whether a QuickDraw was damaged by a fall or by freezing.
