A headlamp is one of the Ten Essentials, and the numbers on the box can be confusing. Petzl publishes a full table for each mode: lumens, beam distance and runtime. We used those tables to compare three popular models. The ACTIK CORE is the all-rounder, the SWIFT RL is the brightest and the TIKKA CORE is the lightest.

The picks
★Best all-round
PetzlACTIK CORE
Best for: All-round hiking with longer reach
A 625-lumen, 88 g rechargeable headlamp with a mixed beam, red light and a hybrid design that also takes 3 AAA batteries.
What we like
- Takes AAA batteries as a backup
- Longest reach of the two CORE lamps (115 m)
- Red light: 2 lm for 60 h
Watch out for
- Max output lasts 2 h
- IPX4 is splash-rated, not submersible
The ACTIK CORE hits 625 lumens and 115 m on max for 2 hours. Its standard mode gives 100 lumens and 60 m for 7 hours. The mixed beam combines flood and spot, so you can see the trail at your feet and the next turn. It weighs 88 g. The hybrid design is the main reason to choose it for longer trips: carry 3 AAA batteries as a spare and you are not tied to a charger.
★Brightest
PetzlSWIFT RL
Best for: Night hiking and pre-dawn starts
A 1200-lumen, 92 g headlamp with REACTIVE LIGHTING that adjusts output to ambient light, and a 2250 mAh rechargeable battery.
What we like
- Brightest here, up to 168 m range listed
- REACTIVE LIGHTING saves battery
- Largest battery of the three
Watch out for
- Heaviest of the three (92 g)
- No AAA backup
- 5 h charge
The SWIFT RL is the lamp for night hiking. Petzl lists 1200 lumens on a 6-second boost and up to 168 m of range. REACTIVE LIGHTING adjusts output to the light around you, which stretches the battery. In standard lighting mode the table shows 800 lumens and 115 m for 2 hours, or 190 lumens and 49 m for 7 hours. It weighs 92 g, has no AAA option and takes 5 hours to charge.
★Lightest
PetzlTIKKA CORE
Best for: Camp chores and close-up trail light
A 450-lumen, 84 g rechargeable headlamp with a wide beam and the same hybrid CORE battery or 3 AAA option as the ACTIK CORE.
What we like
- Lightest of the three (84 g)
- Wide beam suits camp and reading
- Longest low-mode runtime (110 h)
Watch out for
- Shortest reach here (75 m max)
At 84 g, the TIKKA CORE is the lightest here. Its wide beam suits camp, cooking and reading more than spotting trail markers far ahead. Max is 450 lumens and 75 m for 2.5 hours, and low mode runs 110 hours. It uses the same CORE battery or 3 AAA as the ACTIK CORE.
How to choose
- Day hikes that might run late: TIKKA CORE or ACTIK CORE, with spare AAA batteries.
- Pre-dawn summit starts or night hiking: SWIFT RL.
- Torn between the two CORE lamps? See ACTIK CORE vs TIKKA CORE.
Pack the lamp even on short hikes: a storm or a wrong turn can keep you out past dark. See our lightning safety guide for one common reason hikes run long.
Frequently asked questions
How many lumens do I need for hiking?
Petzl's own tables show 100 lumens lighting 45 to 60 m on the CORE lamps for 7 hours, which is enough for walking a clear trail. Higher modes reach farther but run out faster: 2 hours at max on the ACTIK CORE.
Can I use AAA batteries?
The ACTIK CORE and TIKKA CORE take Petzl's CORE rechargeable pack or 3 AAA batteries. The SWIFT RL uses its built-in 2250 mAh battery only.
Are these waterproof?
All three are rated IPX4, which means they resist splashing and rain. They are not rated for submersion.
